Hello all.  This is my first post on my first blog!
I created this blog to try to work through issues that concern me. I will try to focus on one issue per post so as not to get too muddled.  I hope you will be patient with me because I am new to this. 

I work for a great school in a great school district in southern California.  Most of  the teachers I work with are hard-working, religious and have moderate to conservative political views.  Our local teacher's association is well run and has a great working relationship with our district administration.  I feel as though they mostly reflect my values vis-a-vis teaching and working.   My concerns are with the teacher's unions at the state and national level.  

For example, in the November elections, there was a proposition on the ballot , prop 8, that said " Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." 

Somehow, this became an issue that my union thought it should spend millions of member's dollars to defeat.  This should not be the business of a teacher's union!  It has nothing to do with teachers or education of children.  This was only the latest of a long litany of issues the union has spent money on or advocated for that was more reflective of the union's left leaning representatives than the member's at large.

So what to do?  First, I am starting to express my thoughts and feelings in a public manner.  Second, I am going to work for more representative representation.at the state and national level.  I hope to find more like minded teachers in California to join me on my quest to remake the unions into non-political organizations.  No small task!
